Travelling like sultans
I’ll take a wild guess—this might be your first time hearing about this country. But even if I’m wrong, and some Oman expert has stumbled onto this page, it doesn’t change one thing: Oman is still blissfully untrampled by mass tourism. And that’s exactly what we love—what we seek. The only footprints we’ll leave are our own, and even those will soon be erased by the desert wind.
Journey map
Our trip will be divided into several logical parts.
Part 1—mountains and terraces;
Part 2—wadi canyons with swimming and trekking;
Part 3—desert and stars;
Part 4—the sea and turtles. Of course, we’ll also visit cities—Muscat, Nizwa—along with mosques and the long, haunting calls of the muezzin. Wouldn’t be complete without those!

We’ll start in Muscat, the capital of Oman. On the very first day, we’ll head to the mountains—turns out Oman has some seriously impressive ones—where we’ll hike through canyons, explore terraces, and swim in wadis. Later, we’ll spend a full night in the desert. We’ve picked a remote camp to avoid crowds, leaving just the stars and camels for company. As we near the end, we’ll try to catch a glimpse of turtles (though these creatures usually swarm ashore in big numbers from July to September, when Oman hits a cool +936°C—and no, that’s not the country’s telephone code)).

Landscapes
When we picture the Arabian Peninsula in our minds, 99% of it is desert, and the remaining 1% is Dubai with its luxury cars. But Oman is different. It got mountains, a huge coastline, and—of course—desert. And when these three things collided, they created unique landscapes where snow even falls sometimes.
Starry skies
Nowhere and never will you find starry skies like those above the deserts. These very words I once wrote about Atacama - yet they hold just as true for Oman. Indeed, for any region where desert reigns supreme. The infinite starscape of the northern hemisphere will accompany us throughout our journey.
Wadis
You’ll hear this word a hundred times—and you’ll definitely remember it. A wadi is a dry riverbed that only fills with water occasionally. When rain falls in the mountains, water comes rushing through the wadi, carving new patterns into its path. But once the rains stop, so does the flow. What remains, though, are stunning natural pools—perfect for swimming.
Canyoning
What's an adventure without some madness? Oh, we'll definitely have that! If you haven't tried it yet, this is an absolute must! It all starts with a heart-pounding 5-meter jump into the water. I'll stop describing it here - wouldn't want to scare you off. But trust me, this will be next-level thrills! And completely safe - we'll have pros with us to guide your every move, showing exactly where to place each foot.
Accommodation
We'll be living in style with plenty of variety - modern hotels, traditional ethnic houses, desert tents, and seaside cottages. Everywhere we stay will be comfortable and absolutely proper. Accommodation will be arranged for two people sharing.
ITINERARY
Muscat - Bilad Sayt
No point memorizing these names—you won’t even remember them there. Today, we’ll learn what a wadi is, tackle our first trek, and hit the off-road trails. And I mean real off-roading—because that’s Oman’s signature move: 4x4 or bust. Our mission? Camping right next to Snake Canyon by nightfall.
Snake Canyon - Jebel Shams
Canyoning today - no warm-up! We'll slither through Snake Canyon like serpents, picking a route not for the faint-hearted. Then we're off to our digs at Jebel Shams - prepare to have your mind blown! This hotel's location is so insane, you'll remember it forever.
Balcony Walk - Jebel Akhdar
This hike will be next-level epic! We’re talking Oman’s highest mountains, with grand canyons stretching as far as the eye can see. By evening, we’ll roll into Jebel Akhdar—the Green Mountains—where we’ll be staying with mind-blowing views over Oman’s legendary terraces.
Wahiba Sands
Dawn greets us with terraced orchards—their fruit-heavy branches bowing over abandoned villages. A leisurely two-hour amble through this ghostly beauty, then we surrender to the sands. By afternoon, the desert claims us: our cozy micro-oasis awaits, where silence sits heavier than heat and stars crowd close enough to touch.
Raz al Jins
Morning options: dune bashing, sunrise chasing, camel trekking, or quad biking. Our Bedouin guides will show you the ropes. Then, we’ll head toward the coast to a secret turtle haunt. Nesting season runs July through September—when temperatures hit a balmy 452°F (give or take). Winter sightings are rarer, but possible—people regularly spot these armored sand bulldozers lumbering ashore.
Wadi al Arbayeen
We’ve seen plenty of wadis, but we’ve never spent the night in one—until now. This time, we’re heading to a legendary wadi resort where none other than Prince William of Wales once stayed.
Muscat
No rush back to the city today—we’ll leisurely hunt down every iconic spot en route. Once in Muscat, we’ll visit the opera house itself (just the architecture—no performances scheduled, sadly).
YOUR DESERT PROPHET: NAVIGATING OMAN'S EMPTINESS
Dmitry Kozlov
Sometimes I look like this (a proper mountain savage),
and sometimes like that (when we’re not on a Kamchatka-style expedition).
But in Oman? Oh, I’ll be upgrading to full Sultan mode combining all the styles mentioned above.
